Hawk Nelson’s new album Live Life Loud was just released last week, Jason Dunn, front man of Hawk Nelson, took some time to talk with us at CMSpin.com.
Nappy: Did you play any sports in high school?
Dunn: I did, I played soccer and hockey.
Nappy: Have you guys ever picked up a hitchhiker? And why?
Dunn: Yea, we picked up hitchhikers. This is so wrong I can’t believe we did this. But we were stupid when we were younger. When we were living out of a van. One of the promoters had a seven year old son and he loved our band. He was in Chicago we drove their seven year old son from Chicago to Denver to drop him off at his grandparent’s house. I don’t know what we were thinking. I was like 19 being stupid. If we had been pulled over it would have been game over. “Who’s this seven year old kid?” Uhhh, this guy we met yesterday, it’s his son. That’s probably the worse.
Nappy: My friend Andy wanted to know, have you played Beatles Rock band yet?
Dunn: No, I have not, but I’ve heard good things about it!
Nappy: Have you ever failed vocally on expert on Rockband song?
Dunn: Oh of course! Oh failed a song?
Nappy: Yea.
Dunn: Oh no, I actually have never failed a song on Rockband. I like the drums more though!
Nappy: What a great way for us to pretend that we’re like you guys.
Dunn: Ha, Yea feels pretty good.
Nappy: When your file your taxes, do you put Rockstar as your occupation?
Dunn: (laughter), No. I think I just put musician.
Nappy: Between Hawk Nelson and TFK, are you Canadians trying to take over our rock music?
Dunn: I think so. Not even Canada but our hometown!
Nappy: Nice. Did you guys know each other before the bands started?
Dunn: Yea, I grew up with Trevor, TFK’s front man. We went to the same church and school together. Our parents are still neighbors. We’ve known each other our whole lives.
Nappy: Live Life Loud, where you trying to go for a tongue twister? Can you say that five times fast?
Dunn: I don’t know; I’ve never tried. Live life loud. Live life Loud. Live life loud. Live life loud. Live life loud. I can see how that can be a little twisty.
Nappy: Guess that wasn’t on purpose then.
Dunn: No, it just sounded cool to me.
Nappy: Why did you guys choose to release your album right around so many other big album releases?
Dunn: You know what we didn’t choose the release date. I actually just found this out on this record. I found out that records are only released on Tuesdays. I did not know that. Every record that comes out is always released on a Tuesday and ours happens to be on Sept 22nd.
Nappy: In one of your new songs, you talk about how you just want to be alone.
Dunn: Yea, Never Enough.
Nappy: What do you do when you just want to be alone and get away?
Dunn: Well here’s the thing, being a kid growing up wanting to play music. You want to build a fan base, but there are just some days where you just want to be escape from people and have that time of peace. You know what I’m saying. Plus the line rhymed so it fit perfect! Just being honest here.
Nappy: How would you compare Live Life Loud to your past albums?
Dunn: I had a lot more fun on this one than past records. There is just something different about the vibe. We worked with a producer that we really enjoyed, a young guy we’ve known for years. He just has just a fun guy to work with.
The songs were a little bit more grown up and more from the heart than anything. That’s important to me. When you sing a song you’ve got to mean it. Not that it’s ever happened to me before in the past. But it has happened. I feel I can release a lot more emotion into these songs.
Nappy: What was one of the more difficult parts about writing this new album?
Dunn: It wasn’t too bad. There is always a little pressure when the label is saying we need thirteen songs next month. That can a little stressful. We got it done and it felt good.
