Debut Project Continues to Garner Critical Acclaim
Progressive rock band Leeland collected its first GRAMMY nomination today in the category of Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album for their debut, Sound of Melodies (August 15, 2006), at a press conference in Hollywood, Calif. The nominations were announced by The Recording Academy.
Brothers Leeland and Jack Mooring, of Leeland, weigh in with their thoughts on the nomination, “We are overcome with thankfulness and joy about this. God continues to amaze us everyday. Our family is doing back-flips right now, and so are we. Thanks to everyone who have supported us, and whether or not we win, it’s a humbling place to be. Praise the Lord!”
The 49th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on “GRAMMY Sunday,” Feb. 11, 2007, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles and once again will be broadcast live in high definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8 – 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).
In addition to its GRAMMY nomination, Leeland is closing out 2006 with some serious support. In the December 2006 edition of CCM Magazine, Leeland was named “Debut of the Year,” taking the highest combined ranking of the staff-pick lists, appearing on four of five lists, and landing in the Top 5 on three lists. Additionally, Leeland was named “Best New Artist” in Christian Music Today’s 2006 Readers’ Choice Awards.
Leeland is not only winning the hearts of fans, but the hearts of fellow musicians. The band opened multiple dates throughout the fall of 2006 for Third Day, and after seeing Leeland perform, Third Day’s David Carr had this to say, “I’ve not heard a band in a very long time that gets me this excited about the future of Christian music. On nights where Leeland is playing before us, I’m out in the audience worshiping and singing along to the melodies of this great band only minutes before I take the stage myself. In a time when cleverness often trumps warm creativity, Leeland is bringing a fresh perspective with music that truly moves you, and lyrics that get right to the heart of the matter, and the matter... is Christ! Hear me now and believe me later, Leeland rocks!”
Sound of Melodies, the 11-track debut from Leeland was produced by Matt Bronleewe, Marc Byrd and Steve Hindalong. According to Leeland Mooring, “Whenever we play, our main goal is to be able to minister to our generation.” The songs on Sound of Melodies establish a doorway to God’s presence while musically containing layer upon layer of emotional, majestic melodies constructed on rock influences, European groups such as: Travis, Coldplay, Delirious, Doves, and Godfrey Birtill, among others. Leeland is comprised of: Leeland Mooring, guitar/lead vocals; Jack Mooring, piano/vocals; Jake Holtz, bass; Austin Tirado, guitar; and Mike Smith, drums.
