Brand Research:
The Epiphone Company is owned by the Gibson Guitar Corporation.  Founded in 1873 by Anastasios Stathopoulos was bought by the Chicago Music Company in 1957.  Gibson and Epiphone were actually competitors until the buyout. 

In the beginning, Epiphone didn't just make guitars.  They also made upright basse, stringed instruments and banjos.  Epiphone also manufacturers a line of amplifiers.  Although owned by Gibson, Epiphone is considered a lower cost brand.
