Violas
Between the violin and the cello, the viola is the middle child of the violin family. It is of larger size and of deeper pitch than the violin and it’s usually equipped with thicker strings. The musician who plays a viola is a violist, and he’ll need to move his bow across the strings a fraction of a second faster than his neighbor the violinist, because the viola “speaks slower” than the violin.

Cellos
The cello has the distinction of being described as the closest sounding instrument to the human voice. With four strings tuned in perfect fifths, the cello is the bass voice of a string quartet.
