Fiddle or violin?
Perhaps both. “Fiddle” has a generalized meaning and
can refer to any bowed string musical instrument, or
any instrument played with a horsehair bow. Even the
cello is sometimes called “the big fiddle.” While a
violin is sometimes referred to as a fiddle, it’s
also a specific instrument, and its musician may be
known as a violinist, or a fiddler. |

Bows |
|
In music, a bow is a
shaped stick, typically fitted with strands of hair
from a horse’s tail. When moved across a stringed
musical instrument it causes vibration on the
strings, which produces sound. Made from pernambuco
wood or carbon fiber, bows vary in size and length
and are used for the violin, viola, cello and double
bass. A bow maker is called an Archetier. |

Violas |
|
Between the violin and
the cello, the viola is the middle child of the
violin family. It is of larger size and of deeper
pitch than the violin and it’s usually equipped with
thicker strings. The musician who plays a viola is a
violist, and he’ll need to move his bow across the
strings a fraction of a second faster than his
neighbor the violinist, because the viola “speaks
slower” than the violin. |

Batons/Metronomes |
|
Before the first modern baton was designed,
conductors used to use a violin bow or a long staff or even a rolled up
piece of paper, to direct music. While some conductors still choose to
use only their hands and animated gestures, many who do use a baton
consider it an instrument in its own right. Professional conductors may
even have their own custom-made baton. In general, batons are made of
wood, fiberglass or carbon fiber, and their length varies between 10 and
24 inches. |

Cellos |
|
The cello has the
distinction of being described as the closest
sounding instrument to the human voice. With four
strings tuned in perfect fifths, the cello is the
bass voice of a string quartet. The cello can be a
solo instrument but is also a standard member of the
string section of an orchestra. It is the second
largest bowed string instrument. A musician who
plays the cello is a cellist. |

Bass Oufits |
|
Standing at near six
feet tall, the double bass is the largest bowed
string instrument in the symphony orchestra. It is
also the lowest-pitched, its strings usually tuned
to E1, A1, D2 and G2. The double bass is a
transposing instrument, which means that written
notes are read at a different pitch and will sound
one octave lower on the double bass. The musician
playing a double bass is called a bassist. |

Mandolins |
|
The mandolin is a member
of the lute family, which means it is an instrument
that is plucked or strummed. Its teardrop shape may
feature scrolls or other projections, with a round
or oval sound hole bordered with rosettes or
purfling. Modern mandolins have four pairs of
strings plucked with a plectrum. A person who plays
a mandolin is a mandolinist. |
